If the center pin is your +12v pin, you would show 12volts when you 
touch the test lead to any of the other pins. The others are either 
ground, or lights, or brakes, which go to ground after passing through 
the filament or brake coil. Try unhooking the trailer battery and see if 
you still have juice at the center terminal. If you don't, you know the 
center is your +12v connection. If you are connecting to a modern wiring 
harness you will have to change the wiring pattern in the trailer 
harness to match. On my 2001 Dodge pu, the center terminal of the 
harness goes to the trailer backup lights.
