The Everpure RV filter is very good.  Has an excellent activated charcoal
filter which resists clogging and "tunneling". It also allows you to super
chlorinate your water tank with chlorine bleach, kill everything, and then
filter out the chlorine and the particulate matter.  The ouput tastes good
and has the bad stuff removed, though some disolved salts can get through.
Also the element is easy to change, as it uses a bayonet mount rather than a
screw on system which is almost always hard to remove after sitting for many
months.

If you want to really clean the water, reverse osmosis is the way to go, but
is impractical for a portable system with a limited amount of water
(purifies at a ratio of 9:1 (discarding 90%).  RO will even take out a polio
virus and all salts (including heavy metal ones - lead, arsenic etc.). It
requires the charcoal filter to remove disolved gases (chlorine, flourine,
etc.) which is tuypically part of the "system".

There are a lot of highly promoted filters around (which have never
impressed me, other than their great claims) , but from  a practical
standpoint I believe the technology choices are the activated charcoal and
the reverse osmosis as the best ones.  An RO unit will turn urine into
drinking water (NASA uses it for just that purpose on the space station,
among others). To get the water that pure, you would have to distill it
several times!
