Jack,
 Part of defensive driving, besides slowing down, is to PAY ATTENTION.
We've all been reading about proposed bans on motorists' use of cell
phones because of the distraction. Other distractions include playing
with the radio, getting a cold one out of the cooler, eating while
underway, etc.

Professional race car drivers are usually scared to death to drive on
the highway because their fellow drivers aren't usually focused on the
task at hand. This is much more important than any "skill" that the
other drivers may or may not have.
