HI,
 I have started to use a device that is sometimes refered to as 
a "Thin-sheet Nutsert".  One manufacturer is "Au-Ve-Co", located in 
Covington,  Ky.  You "pull it in" from one side of a panel, just as 
you would "pull in" a rivet.  The tool I use (looks/works just like a 
blind-rivet tool) I purchased from Harbor Freight store, but I 
understand from local fastener suppliers that the tool is available 
almost anywhere.  The Nutsert's are available in various sizes, 
aluminum and steel, but the sizes I have used most are 8/32 and 
10/24.  I use them for applications where I suspicion that I may 
need/want to remove "something" in the future, and I may not want the 
hassel of drilling out a rivet( or worry that "something" may come 
loose ).  For decorative applications, I use brass screws and for 
utility/outside applications I use stainless steel screws.  They are 
great for use in aluminum because they seem to be stronger than a 
rivet install (I guess it depends).  I have used them on  wood veneer 
panels with VERY good results.
