     I believe the recommendation is to simply pull the pin out and 
listen for the operation of the brakes (you don't need to be hooked 
up to do this, if your trailer battery is charged).  An ammeter in 
the brake line or a magnetic compass near the electric brakes might 
be useful, but aren't really necessary.  Don't leave it out long, 
however - the brakes are full on with the pin out.  It should pull 
out fairly easily, and go back easily also.  At least, mine does.
     Others on list may have better methods.
