Well it would make sense to NOT connect the breakaway cable to the 
hitch. If the hitch (receiver) ever came loose from the vehicle, then 
having the cable attached to it wouldn't have too much effect
in the way of stopping things.  I guess what really matters, is what you 
think of your particular hitch mounting situation. If you don't think 
that it will ever come off, then hook to it. If your
paranoid, well . . . .

You talked about running the cable around the bumper, this would have 
the same deficiencies as the hitch, in that it could come off as well. 
It's only bolted on like the hitch, actually a lighter
connection, I would bet.

Where's the line to be drawn then? the hitch, the Bumper, through an eye 
on the frame ( some tow vehicles don't even have a frame, just sheet 
metal. could get scrapped off I suppose). Maybe the axle
is the last spot to guarantee that the cable is pulled when a problem 
arises with the trailer connection.

Having said that, that's the only spot I have ever hooked it to (the 
hitch receiver Pin).   (c:
