Larry,

The answers to your questions are subjective and may differ between the
folks who might answer and also differ from your personal leanings.

Are you certain that the previous owner of your trailer didn't discover the
holding tank had failed which led him or her to remove the toilet and use a
porta-potty?  Holding tank failure in elderly Airstreams is pretty common.

I think most would prefer the capability to simply connect an external hose
and dump waste without lugging around a waste container, holding it over a
suitable dump site, and dumping it.  Not much fun.  However, if the choice
is between a $1500 bill to repair or install a black water holding tank and
toilet, an inexpensive new porta-potty from Wal-Mart might look pretty
attractive to many.
