Re: [A/S] Do it Your Self A/C
You have a choice of two ways to install an AC. You can purchase the
Airstream adapter pan from a dealer and use the Duo Therm Penquin series
AC it is designed for. Or you can use a less expensive AC unit and
construct an adapter to account for the flat AC bottom and the sloped
roof of your Airstream.
The Airstream adapter serves two purposes. One, it fills in the gap
between the AC bottom and the Airstream roof. Two, it acts as a
collector for all the condensation and routes it off the coach roof
via a drain tube provided in the wall of you coach.
Your coach is prewired, and more importantly structurally reinforced.
The specified location is 121" back from " #1 rib". The #1 rib is the
front most rib at the point were the front segments meet the long
side/roof sheets. Measure along the ceiling from the #1 rib toward the
back 121". At that point you may or may not have a vent. If you do you
will have to remove it. If not you will have to cut a new hole. At that
point the opening will have added reinforcement, 110V wiring and a drain
tube. The should be a circuit breaker already in the AC breaker box.
Another challenge will be getting the upper AC unit on the top of your
coach. If you have an awning, it works well as a step over point to get
on the top. You can walk on the top of the coach. It is recommended to
stay on the rivet lines. In addition, any protection you can add to
reduce the scuffing by you shoes is a good thing. We have commonly used
blankets or a flipped over piece of carpet.
