I'm using a '99 Chevy Express passenger van (1500). 
It has a 5.7 liter engine 3.73 axle and H.D towing
package.  Here is what is in my manual.  I'll copy
below in it's exact words.

"You should use THIRD (3) (or, as you need to, a lower
gear) when towing a trailer.  Operating your vehicle
in THIRD (3) when towing a trailer will minimize heat
buildup and extend the life of your transmission".

Pg 4-30 1999 Chevy Express Van Manual.

I haven't had a Chevy van Manual which didn't have a
paragraph like the one above.  My '99 manual seems
generic enough to cover all the different Express van
models up to the 3500 series.

I always tow in third.
