My owners manual for my 99/ GMC Sub C2500/454/4.10 says I can tow in 
OD!
On the Suburban BB that I go to, every one says NO, not on hills! So 
don't tow in OD unless I'm on flat ground. When I come to a hill, 
when it shifts to 3rd, I pull it into 3rd. When I reach the top of 
the hill so I can see how long or steep the down side is, I either 
leave it in 3rd or shift back to OD. A lot of times I'll drive for 
several miles in 3rd.
