Todd,
 You do really need at least 10% of the trailer's weight on the tounge.
The equalizer hitch is then used to transfer some of the hitch weight to
the front of the tow vehicle and the axle(s) of the trailer.

The trailer will not tow worth a darn if it's balanced, believe me.
