a) I think it's a great idea, fitting the panels to the curve of the roof.

b) I think that the panels only need to be raised 1/4" or so off the surface
of the roof, to permit air-flow around the panel... you don't want to 'cook'
it. A rigid mounting system might be best.

c) A permanent mounting makes sense - as you've indicated - being that you
can be charging while on the fly... however, a charging line from the
tow-vehicle's alternator will do the same, probably faster. Nevertheless, a
permanent mounting would look better, and independent of the tow-vehicle.
