I'm not very knowledgeable about gas appliances and they can be dangerous if
repaired incorrectly by an amateur like myself.

Your problem does sound like your thermocouple has expired.  Unless someone
more knowledgeable corrects me, I would try replacing the thermocouple
first.  I would record the year and model number of the furnace, possibly
remove the thermocouple if you can, and visit any RV dealer.  I don't know
if Suburban furnace parts for one of that vintage are still available but I
think other brands of RVs also use the brand.
