Thanks for your comments.  There are few things as valuable as experience.

I had never heard of the Warner rheostat you mentioned.  I have only seen
the old Kelsey "screen door spring" type variable resistors.  And I never
thought of looking for old-style Kelsey controllers in truck junk yards.
That is a good idea and I'm going to try it when we have a warm Saturday in
the near future.  Chances are if an old controller remained in a scrapped
pickup it would still work fine as they are pretty near bullet proof.
