It's a very high quality foam like material.  I'm like the Princess & the Pea 
story.  It's one of the only mattresses I can sleep on and not get pained.  I 
put the thinner Temperpedic pad on top of my stock AA/S mattresses.  Works 
for me.  I also find I don't turn as much if at all, in my sleep.
