[A/S] A/S coating ?

Hi John Hilty,

The Winter of 2001 is when our 1991 recoating (of our 1977 31' Excella 500) began to break down.
Perhaps this year's dry desert and intense sun was the final straw.

Today, when I washed off the desert dirt, pieces of corn flake size chunks of plasticoat came with
it. Fortunately, the chunks (they look like pieces of plastic wrap) came only from the very top
(above the seams) and from the center portion of the end caps. I was surprised by how easily the
flakes shed with just minor pressure from a nylon scrubby. What will I do about it? Nothing for the
next six months, except help the shedding process along.

Ironically, another Airstreamer stopped by as I was putting away the wash bucket and hose. He
commented: "Your Airstream looks great. How do you keep it so shiny?" My reply, "Oh, I just wash it
whenever it gets dirty." I couldn't bring myself to point out the flaking or any of the other flaws
and dents that another Vintage owner would certainly notice.

Regardless of the flaking and other imperfections, it's still our mechanically mint Airstream with
all its inherent beauty and classic design.
