I had the same problem.   In my installation, I have the lock on the wall to
the right, and the deadbolt inserts into the door.  (The reverse of a normal
door situation).

I removed the striker plate and used a metal file to enlarge the hole in the
striker plate so that the deadbolt could enter the hole easier.  It's still
a bit difficult, but at least now it's possible to lock the door.

A look at the drawing on in this document will show you how all this fits
together.

You can't move the deadbolt, and it will be difficult to move the door.
What can be done is to make
the hole in the striker plate larger.    Keep the door open an inch or two
and throw the deadbolt over.  You should be able to see the direction in
which it misses.
