[A/S] 1969 Globe Trotter :(

Our sad Globetrotter day:
Drove out into the high desert to see an advertized
69 Globetrotter.
I guess the asking price of $5000 set us up...
Quite a bit of 'customization' had befallen her. The front window (which
originally must have been quite a bit smaller than what we'd seen in other
pics of simlar vintage GT's) and frame was knocked out to accommodate two
(one dead, one working household room AC units).
The rear bumper/step had been extended about 2 feet and a large homemade
metal toolbox had been riveted into the rear across the full width and up
to the rear window. Inside this box the original Airstream rear panel was
missing and replaced with a styrofoam sheet using rags to nudge it in
place. An electric meter box was bolted to the top of the toolbox and into
the rear of the coach as well. The front lounge had been ripped out and a
'custom' twin bed installed in its place. A heavy wire drooped across the
ceiling and powered numerous 'aftermarket' receptacles.
We were surprised to find a rear lavy as again we'd seen pics from other
Globetrotters ('68) and wondered if this was maybe an early Beatrice model.
All the original stuff that had been left alone was still OK. Original
frige still running. Original shower head. Cabinets up top had aluminum
fronts/doors--not wood. That surprised us too. Door and screen door fit and
clicked into place like swiss watch parts. Man, that cast door hinge is a
humdinger! Floors felt solid thoughout. Seller said he'd had problems with
the floor in the bath and had steel plate cut to fit the lavy floor and had
installed that and covered it with linoleum.
Anyway a skirt ran the entire circumference so we couldn't check wheels,
underbelly, etc but all that was moot as we are no match for the restore
project this poor old gal so desperately needs. We were both bummed out for
the rest of the day. Man's inhumanity to machine!
We took pics and will post them shortly. If anyone is interested we'll send
the url.
