Re: [A/S] More on towing

Gerald,
That gear-looking thing is very similar to a straight spur gear, not a
helical gear like the regular speedo gear. The pickup looks much like a tape
recorder head, plugs in the side of the tailshaft housing where the speedo
cable would otherwise go, and runs very close to (NOT touching!) the "gear".
I saw these things by the dozens when I worked in the plant that reman'd the
700R4, even looked into some method of testing the pickup's output while the
tranny was on the dyno for final test. There were NO other gears involved,
but I don't know if that "gear-looking thing" was available with different
numbers of teeth. I'll ask my buddy who was the Factory Expert at Toledo
PowerTrain and see if he knows.

Those rear-end gears shouldn't be noisy if they're set up correctly. That's
fairly involved, not difficult, just tedious. That's where you HAVE to have
the housing spreader so you can adjust the shims from side to side. I'd
consider popping the cover off and look at the wear pattern or use some
Prussian Blue to check the gear mesh. Any number of books and manuals have
pictures of what it should look like, and it's really important to have it
'right' if it's to have a long life.
