Bill,
 Now think about what you're saying, then go out and look at your own
trailer.

When you tension the spring bars, you pry up the hitch and thence the rear
of your tow vehicle. This is transferring weight both onto the front wheels
of the tow vehicle AND the trailer wheels. If your spring bars are strong
enough (too strong?), you can lift the hitch right off the ball.

If there was more down pressure on the ball after you hitch up the spring
bars, the ball would go towards the ground instead of UP.

Go out in your driveway, play around, er..experiment, and get back with me.
