Sounds like the tank was a little ripe... I had my Atwood out this 
summer and the only attachments were the screws around the frame and 
the plumbing in the back... I am assuming that you pulled the gas 
pipe down to clear the frame of the water heater....The cardboard and 
fiberglass around the tank is a little bigger than the hole and it 
came out in pieces.... The new heater will have a plastic (styrofoam)
insulator around the tank and it seemed to be slightly bigger than 
the hole... I took the insulation off and installed it from inside, 
after the heater was in place....If you can see your way clear to 
getting one of the electronic start models, I would suggest that 
route..The switch to light the heater off is very handy on the cold 
mornings when you would have to go outside and get the pilot going 
with a pilot model....I went full boat and got the LP/AC/electronic 
start model.(AC operation is completely separate from the LP so any 
trouble with gas system would not interfere with the AC operation).. 
Atwood is in Rockford IL and is available from a number of 
distributors...Save your door just in case.. the new ones are painted 
in color including aluminum....Good Luck....Jim
