Steel wool might work IF I remembered to stuff it around the cord, IF
visitors stumbling over the power cord didn't dislodge it and IF mice
running up the cord didn't knock it out of the way.

In three or four years since the landlord had steel siding put on the
house and I foamed the bottom edge, I've had no mice in the house and
just one or two small crickets each year. Not the hoards of mice and
crickets that used to call this place home.
