Scott:  I have a 1960 Overlander and the description provided by 
Garnett is what I found when I had to remove my toilet and tank.  The 
tank does rest on the floor and the marine toilet was screwed onto a 
3" brass coupler molded into the fiberglass.  Unfortunately, my tank 
was unsalvageable when I removed it to repair the bathroom floor that 
was severely water damaged. Years of corrosion on the fittings would 
not let me remove the toilet and the fiberglass was cracked in 
several places.  Rather than try to fabricate a new fiberglass tank 
or repair it, I chose to replace the entire floor, re-arrange the 
bathroom,install a slightly larger new black tank, establish a better 
dump valve location and provide easier access to the potty. (No more 
hike, twist and turn to get comfortable....if you know what I 
mean :) )

Please take a look at the below album under my airstream renovation 
and see if one of the "before" pictures looks similar to your setup.
