I recently came across an old sales brochure from GMC Motorhome that 
has an interesting bunk bed configuration.  If you look at the bottom 
right hand corner of the brochure, you will see that the bunk has 
been created by separating the sofa and using the back cushion as the 
foundation for the upper bed.  This same configuration could be used 
with your double bed and provide an interesting alternative to 
building a permanent bunk.
