Scott,
I took my '60 Caravanner apart.  I think you have the same thing.  The
black tank is made of fiberglass and has a 3" brass male nipple that the
original toilet threaded on.  The brass nipple is flanged and molded into
the fiberglass.  So, the original toilet was threaded onto the brass nipple
and was supported by the black tank.  The plywood floor gives the tank top
additional support for anyone on the throne.  I completely removed my tank
and had to use a Dremel tool to split the aluminum base on the original
toilet before I could unscrew the toilet from the tank.  It was a job!  The
vent for the tank was in the base of the toilet below the foot valve.
