If the cover is about square and the gas pipe goes through the 
center, it should not get hot, maybe warm. That gasket keeps the 
forced combustion air from escaping around the plate. There is also 
some non-hardning putty around the pipe that must be pressed back 
into place. Mine has foam like weather stripping around the plate.
