I don't use the front rack-type hookup.  I've got a suburban and just one of
those cheap canoe-mounting thingies...gunwale foam blocks and
straps....works just fine.  Though the straps in front are a little
distracting - 'specially when you don't tie up the loose ends of the straps
and it's waving at you for a hundred miles or so...
