Well Michael:

I'm the one who started this whole sorry mess.  I never said that the 
endcaps were made of fiberglass, I only related a conversation with 
someone who claimed to know about these things.  As a matter of fact, if 
you read the above, you will see that I thought that they were made of 
steel.  A number of folks jumped right on this, ie, the fact that they 
are indeed made of steel.  End of subject.  However....

In the message directly above there is also mentioned the following: 

"In the early '70's I don't believe they had any plastics or fiberglass
that could economically or structurally adapted for such usage."

My '67 Safari has INNER endcaps made of fiberglass.  There is no reason 
that similar OUTER encaps could not have been produced.  After all, 
fiberglass boats, among other things, have been around longer than that.

But please note that this fact is neither here nor there relative to the 
actual material of the subject endcaps.  As far as I'm concerned, they're 
steel and God help anyone who suggests otherwise.
