You should feel free to strip off the remaining clear coat. Use a paint remover such as a Bix. When you have it clear you can leave it alone until you decide to polish it. It may commence oxidizing but that will come off when you polish it. However, coating it with a auto wax or sealer will help protect the the aluminum, particularly if you are on the coast where salt air common.
