 My '68 G.T., also 20', weighed 3200# empty, and 4000# when ready to
roll. I suspect that your S-10 is inadaquet, it's a little light and
underpowered. Check your owner's manual for towing capacities and GCWR
(gross combined weight rating). You need to include the weight of
passengers and any 'stuff' that you carry in the bed of the truck, so
the only way to be sure of what's going on is to weigh the entire rig
when it's ready to roll, any public scale can accomodate you.

It's common for the axle, brakes, and lights to all need replacement on
a trailer of that age, but the price sounds a bit high to me.
