I think you are talking about the Warner controller, which mounts onto the
brake pedal and your foot actually presses on this controller, which sends
the proportional electrical current to the brakes. In the standard mounting
configuration, you do have some degree of control if you want to reduce
trailer braking effect, but the normal action is to apply strong braking
force immediataly in a panic situation.

I got mine in November of '96. It was listed in my RV Store's 1995 catalog
as: Warner Automatic foot-operated brake controller. The only numbers
associated with it in this catalog is their catalog number - no Warner
model number. You might want to call a few suppliers and ask if they have
or can get the Warner line. I think it is an excellent brake controller and
was quite easy to install.

These are probably very popular with the trailer rental places - the guys
like U-HAUL. Since the controller is so easy to install and remove, they
probably use them all the time on some of the rental customer's vehicles.
Check with them about gtting one. Just describe it to them and they might
know all about it.

Oh - it just occurred to me to go out to the truck and get the little
installation/adjustment sheet that came with it. The model nr is 1100-28,
manufacturer is Warner Electric, Brake and Clutch Division, 449 Gardner St.
South Beloit, IL 61080. Tel 815-389-3771. Looks like they have been making
this little thing for a long time - revision date on this paper is 2/76
(!), so the phone nr or address might have changed. 

I recently asked at my local camper supply store if there were any
different models of this one (for 6 wheels instead of 4), and they looked
it up - there was no model for 6 wheels, but the one for 4 wheels was still
listed, and they wanted about $105 MSRP for it.
