Yes the awning material slides into the channel on the street side.
Hopefully you will find the poles somewhere in the rig, they do hold up the
outside edge. The ropes with the attached springs are for guy wires (the
springs provide some give when the wind blows). You should also find tent
pegs to anchor everything to the ground, if they are not there be sure to
get the heavy duty metal pegs, not those cheap plastic ones! The same goes
for the tent poles, get heavy duty ones. These old type awnings are a bit
awkward, but we found that with practice my wife and I  can set ours up in
about 5 minutes.
