     Actually, you can take US 50 on past Pueblo and all the way to Wichita, Kansas.  I was on this stretch two years ago, and don't remember any problems with the road.  It will take you through Dodge City, thus giving you the chance to see Boot Hill, and to also get the hell out of Dodge.  As I remember, they had a recreated old western town part of Dodge City, whey I think they put on shootouts at certain times.
     From Wichita, you can take the Kansas turnpike (I-35) on to Kansas City   If you are taking the route that Don Horn suggests into Texas, there is a free city campground in Dumas, Texas, with electricity and water.  It was full when I came through this summer, so I stayed at a commercial one instead.  Full hook-up cost me $11 for the night.
