I agree with you about everything but the "re-clear coat".  All the experts 
I have talked with in the VAC list say that once the clear coat is gone 
your preservation is confined to polishing/waxing.

The problem with "re-clear coat" is that a lot of unseen oxidation is 
buried under your new application.  This will blister sooner than you would 
like leaving you to clean up the whole clear coat mess a second time.

Best to strip, clean with a fairly aggressive polishing compound and finish 
with a fine compound like AP-300.  You'll need a very good polisher for this.
