I used to work for a sign outfit and made signs of the plastic for trucks for 
a living and we put dish detergent in a spray bottle.  We sprayed the area 
where the letters went liberally first, then applied the letters.  The soap 
and water gives you a chance to position the letters correctly, shift them if 
necessary, then use a squeegee or credit card to push out the bubbles and 
excess water, gently, please, or you will push them out of line! They will 
adhere well when dry.
