Deep cycle batteries will charge off a generator just like starting
service batteries; the design of the battery has nothing to do with
the charging; more particularly is refers to the ability to take
repeated deep discharges over its design life without damage to the
plate structure like a starter battery will.

If you want a really great battery in either deep cycle or starting
use, try the Optima Spiral Cell batteries. They also have the great
advantage of having no free electrolyte, and can be mounted sideways
if necessary, plus cannot leak, ever !  They are great diesel starting
batteries. Interstate Battery distributes them with their label on
top, but you may need to find a distributor to buy them... dealers
dont have a clue what they are.
