A couple of places that are really great:

* Gunnison - a true "outdoorsman's" paradise.  I went to college there,
National forests on three sides, lots of excursion possibilities, mountain
passes that loop back around to Gunnison by way of Pitkin & Cumberland Pass
to Tincup & Taylor reservoir (rent a boat and fish)(unpaved) -  Crested
Butte by way of Ohio valley, Ohio Pass and Kebler Pass (unpaved).  Passes
without trailer, naturally. There's fishing, rafting - gorgeous country.
Recommend 2 to 3 days.
* Montrose - 60 miles west of Gunnison, on Hwy 50, the Black Canyon of the
Gunnison (one of our newest Nat'l Parks - you can see it in 1-2 hours). One
day or drive on through to Siverton, on Hwy 550 "the Million Dollar Highway"
(National Scenic Hwy)and Durango.
* Durango - ride the Silverton & Durango narrow gauge railroad.  At least 1
day.
* Mesa Verde Nat'l Park - just a little toasted from the wildfires
* Four Corners or Arches Nat'l Monument & Monument Valley

Another very scenic area:

* Cache La Poudre River on Hwy 14 , Fort Collins up the Cache La Poudre
River on Hwy 14 by way of Cameron Pass (paved - National Scenic Hwy) to
Steamboat Springs and on to Dinosaur Nat'l Monument.

Load of stuff to see and do in Colorado, just depends on how much time you
have.  Very good book - Real Cool Colorado Places for Curious Kids, by Diane
Liggett and James Mack, lists 20 area of interest for kids and the young at
heart.  Bo)

You should try to book ahead (very early) for reservation on the train and
other accommodations - DUH you don't need motel reservations - you have an
AS.  LOL

BTW how do you like your Excursion, is it Diesel??
