With regard to covering roof vents, I would like to offer a rather primitive 
solution, that worked for us.  Of course, endorsing this solution means 
sacrificing aesthetics, however.....

After too many days of unrelenting B.C. sunshine (we, in Alberta are simply 
not accustomed to that much light!) - we covered our two roof vents with the 
Entertainment section of the Vancouver Province Newspaper.  With a judicious 
amount of wide masking tape, the light was successfully blocked and if, and 
when, we had "company", we simply peeled off and burned our makeshift 
light-blockers (but not before reading them, of course).

Yes, I know - you're probably thinking I was a Campfire Girl....ahem, uh, 
not.

P.S. Dark, dense material is not limited to the Vancouver Province, I would 
guess there are many newspapers that would suffice as "light-blockers" - I 
suspect the National Enquirer would do the job admirably))
