 Not only do you need to practice quick stops, but quick lane changes. A
crash can often be avoided by switching lanes or going to the shoulder,
but you'd better have practiced that before doing it for real. 

Same thing with backing your trailer. Take it to the local school
parking lot or far corner of the mall and use the lines for guidance.
Practice backing it between a set of lines and it won't be too long
before you're an expert.
