FWIW, we have a '95 Explorer which we DO NOT USE to pull a trailer.  This
vehicle now has 67,000 miles on it.  The first 55,000 miles were on OEM
Firestone tires which we religiously kept pressured to 35 psi.  No problem,
but we don't drive like they do in the SUV commercials, either.  Also, we do
not travel in the extremely hot areas of the country, which seems like a
factor in the tire failure picture.
