For a pad I suggest one should use a high grade commercial pad.  This 
stuff is probably less the 1/4 thick but very dense.  This way you can 
avoid the high, plush, soft effect that most carpet pads in a home are 
designed to give, which don't exactly go with a travel trailer.  The 
commercial stuff does not deteriorate and will outlast your carpet plus 
helping your carpet last longer.
