I am gettting a new DSI , LP/Electric hot water heater for my 68 Trotter, but 
the old one still works.  Just seems to be leaking, and that may be a result 
of my plumbing some time ago.  These things had a liner in them from the 
factory.  I cut into the liner at the fitting, and I think it got water in 
the area between the tank and the liner.    However, to get back to your 
question.  I take a propane torch and heat the thermocouple while holding the 
pilot button down.   Once the thermocouple gets hot, then I turn on the gas 
thermostat while the torch is still lit.  In a few seconds the heater will 
light.   It just takes quite a while to get all the air out of the lines....

Done this for years..  The new heater won't have very much character, but i 
will have an old one for spare parts if anyone needs one...
