Airstream's built through 1961 did not have clearcote applied at the "factory".
Although many older ones have since then, Airstream only started doing it in 1962
right after the coach was built. The skin metal was essentially the same until the
middle of the 1982 production year. At that point, they changed to a "dull" metal
with a more pronounced grain or texture. This was used until Aug. of 1998 when
they started to convert over to "pre finished" metal, first on the Excella/Limited
and then as the old metal ran out, on the Safari/Bambi. The new pre finished metal
has a polyurethane based clearcote applied prior to delivery to Airstream.
