Diesels do not have a butterfly in the carburetor as there is no carburetor. Result is that the engines
feels full throttle with no gas when you coast, almost like freewheeling. The exhaust brake, or engine
retarder, is a butterfly just aft of the turbine which acts by closing and blocking exhaust gasses.
Remember the old potato in the exhaust trick? Same thing. Torque lock just locks up the tranny so it
does not overheat and burn up form torque converter slippage. This can cause some manufacturers,
like Dodge, to cry foul and try to deny a warranty claim against a transmission failed from overheating
due to engine braking without being locked up. Go to the BD web page (www.bd-vfi.com) for an
explanation by pros. They all work the same. I also have the BD and like very much. The torque lock
is for auto trannies only; sticks do not need it.
