If there is anything I know something about it is radio so I'll try to
help.

A good rule of thumb to go by when determining if a radio will work
somewhere is, "if you can see through it, radio waves will pass through
it".  While the reverse of this is NOT true, radio waves will not pass
through metal of any kind very well.  A fact that you have already
discovered.

VOILA!! All that remains is to get the radio somewhere near a window or
something the radio waves can pass through, or bring the waves to the
radio.  

One answer that immediately comes to mind is, "run a wire out through
the window; or through a skylight; or even out the door.  Go to Radio
Shack and buy some small, stranded, insulated wire.  Run it to the
outside, the longer the better (just let it dangle out there where
nobody can get tangled up in it)  and then wrap several turns of the
inside end around your radio and it's built-in antenna.  This will take
some experimentation, but you'll get it after awhile.  Might even help
to skin back some of the insulation and attach it to the telescoping
antenna on the radio if there is one.  Unfortunately, most modern
transistor radios don't have a direct connection for using an external
antenna.

Hope this helps a little.  I know! I know!  It's not a GOOD answer, but
it'll work. At least until you can buy a more expensive receiver and run
a permenant antenna outside through a hole of some sort.  Wives have a
way of deserving things like this and it'll get you off the hook for an
anniversary or birthday or a "just because" day.  Ha!  Good luck.
