Don, if there is a short in the system, it should run
your tow vehicle battery down also in pretty short
order when hooked up and without the motor running.
Therefore I would suspect the battery. On the other
hand my experience with converters (Univolt) is that
they put out plenty enough 12 volt power to run things
in the trailer even with a not so good battery. The
exception being a battery that is shorted internally.
Therefore I would suspect the Univolt. Is the Univolt
humming or slightly warm when the trailer is connected
to 110? If not are you sure it is getting 110?
