Re: [a/s] Towing Question Can-Am

Howdy,
Finally, a subject that I can shine a light on. Chrysler used body on frame
construction through 1959 on all models. All models, except for the
Imperial, were unibody from 1960 on up, though the cowl structure was
retained from '57 - '64. Imperials were body on frame through 1966. And,
indeed, Lincoln started with the 1958 model year with unibody construction.
The body engineers cut their teeth on that project. It was found that the
structure was too large and disportionate to reap the unibody's ultimate
benefit of lightness. The result of this lesson was the (comparatively)
diminuitive 1961 Continental, which boasted an very solid body structure.
Body on frame construction lends itself to better towing, whereas the load
is being absorbed by the thick frame members and not the more fragile thin
body panels that make up a unibody structure. It is a rare occasion that I
can use this information, thanks for the opportunity. Eric Ruud
