Not to start any wars, but just to offer a bit of peace-of-mind to those who
feel strung out when they know they can't change their oil every 3k or 4k.
You are really doing okay. It is clear that many people are following dated
oil-changing rules. (Speaking strictly of late-model gas engines, not early
gas or any diesels. I know nada about diesels.) Unless you are racing, or
running in filthy dusty conditions, changing oil at 3,000 miles is just
throwing away good oil and probably only making an oil vendor happy.  If you
can afford to, then fine, it can't hurt to change often, but 5,000 miles is
perfectly acceptable, especially with good synth oil, like Mobil-1. Most
oils break down due to two factors: polymer shearing which is cumulative and
overheating, which is rare nowadays. And polymer shearing today isn't the
big factor it was with earlier oils, and most of us run large, slow engines
such as V-8s (or V-10s!) which are quite easy on oil compared to the
hyper-active smaller engines.
