[a/s] To tow a vintage Airstream

Hello, I'm an Airstream-dreamer and future Airstream owner. I'm looking 
for a nice vintage 14-19 ft. trailer to fall into my lap one day soon. In 
the mean time, my big question is tow vehicles. 

With the new Bambi at 4500 lbs. it would seem I'd need a 3/4 ton pickup 
to tow one, but I see photos of vintage Airstreams pulled by cars. Were 
the older trailers much lighter, or were the people not aware of the 
dangers, or was it that they just traveled at slower speeds? 

I am not fond of big pickups or suburbans, and I favor Toyotas for their 
dependability. What are my alternatives?

I would like to know what you vintage owners are using for tow vehicles, 
and what your experiences have been with smaller lighter vehicles.
