Re: [a/s] Digital Cameras

The latest generation of digital cameras can take images at 3 megapixels. At 24
bit color depth that would be a lot more than 9 MB per image, unless there's
something wrong with my arithmetic.

Top end slide scanners can convert a 35 mm slide into a digital image of 20 or
so megapixels, and even that isn't exploiting the full resolution of the film
medium. So in spite of all the hype there is still a big gap between the
resolution of even professional digital systems and that of photographic film.

Of course that difference will not be very obvious unless you are making poster
or mural size enlargements, or projecting your images on a large screen. But
the kind of crispness we associate with the work of Edward Weston or Ansel
Adams, for example, is still beyond the reach of digital technology. Not
forever, of course, but the size of the resulting files does get a bit daunting.
